From Euro Militaire 2014 to Golden Demon 2014

I’m back from Euro Militaire with a bronze for Uncle John but Squarg didn’t get anything. I can't pretend I'm not feeling gutted but I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles. What saved the day for me was getting to meet up and socialise with so many painters and all round good guys! And I've come away from Euro with a modest but exciting stash of goodies, so I've got some really interesting projects to look forward to. The best bit of all was seeing my mate Andy win gold. I swear he was so happy he was floating a few inches off the floor!

Inspired, I’m getting straight back to painting and I'm starting a single 40k figure for Golden Demon. Or I will when it comes out tomorrow! This is probably the stupidest thing I've decided to do in a long time. The time scale is mental and I have doubts about being able to do a really good piece in such a short timescale (if I can finish it at all). But as I’ve decided to go to GD I'd like to at least try to take part.

This means I have to try and paint a quality mini in two weeks – like I said mental!

  2. I have been told about some of the feedback you got on Squarg, seems like all frogs should be really glossy if I heard correctly? Struggling to see how a judge can mark someone down on that type of a criteria, especially when judging a fantasy piece!
Good luck with GD, I am doing the mad dash myself at the moment, easily 50-70 hours left on my diorama, but 2 weeks can be a lot when you put the time in! Good luck kidda :)

  3. It happens, good of you to take it in a positive way though. Andy and 10 have been painting circles around the rest of us lately, right? Looking forward to this new one from you!

  4. They still have golden daemon? I thought Games Days were over. Maybe its just a UK thing. Anyway, I definitely know the feeling after a competition in which you worked so hard for, only to come home with no recognition. Both pieces are very good and your style is really coming through them. I think on Uncle John, the style is very different from the usual entry. It's flawlessly executed and bright, but in contrast to other painters, its focus isn't realism. Art - such a hard to thing to put forth into competitions. No matter how professional the judge, there's still an element of subjectivity.

    1. Although I'm disappointed Uncle John didn't do better I'm not all that surprised. The moment I put him on the shelf at Euro I thought he looked out of place among the other busts and he definitely looked too shiny. I wouldn't change anything (apart from the shine) on Uncle John but there is plenty to consider next time I paint a bust.
